Raghuram B. Bhat, MD, MA, FAPA, is a board-certified psychiatrist, with additional board certifications in addiction medicine and geriatric psychiatry.  Dr. Bhat’s private practice opened in July of 2018.

Dr. Bhat was born and raised in New York, where he completed his residency and fellowship in psychiatry.  While at Stony Brook University Hospital, he served as Chief Resident of Consult-Liason Psychiatry, and Fellow of Geriatric Psychiatry.  Prior to medicine, he had been a school teacher and musician in New England, and a Mind-Brain Research Fellow at Brown University, where he completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in Neuroscience.

Dr. Bhat had held a number of medical leadership roles prior to opening a private practice.  He has served as the Medical Director of multiple dual diagnosis outpatient clinics, a residential/detox substance facility, and a methadone clinic, as well as Chief Medical Officer of a community mental health organization.  He has taught, supervised, and mentored medical students, psychiatry residents, and addiction psychiatry fellows, as well as psychiatric nurse practitioners and other psychiatrists.  He has been interviewed for both written and television news stories on his efforts to provide medication-assisted treatment for underserved adults with opioid addiction.

Dr. Bhat believes in providing compassionate, trauma-informed, and patient-centered medical and psychological care for persons suffering from psychiatric and substance disorders, utilizing the best available pharmacological and behavioral interventions.  In addition to his expertise with managing medications for psychiatric and substance use disorders, Dr. Bhat is comfortable with a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches.  Some areas in which he has received training include CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), CPT (cognitive processing therapy), EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), IFS (internal family systems), guided imagery, hypnosis, coaching, mindfulness, and psychodynamic therapy.

Dr. Bhat has a special interest in understanding and addressing the psychological trauma that often underlies addiction, as well as the course of many other chronic medical diseases.
